Chamber Accepting Donations for Governor's Challenge Food Drive
The Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce was challenged, along with other chambers of commerce in the state, to collect food between Memorial Day and July 4 in an effort to resupply dwindling shelves at food pantries.
The chamber asks all members to bring canned and non-perishable food to any committee meeting, breakfast, lunch and mixer during the month of June.
The need for food has risen sharply over the past few years and supplies cannot keep up with demands.
A recent study by Feeding America found that over 1,012,500 Virginians are considered "food insecure." This represents a 54% increase since 2006. A large number of these individuals are children, senior citizens, disabled adults, and the new face of hunger - individuals who have lost their jobs and are having problems making ends meet.
Traditionally, summer is always one the lowest donation periods of the year for food pantries, but with its members' help, the chamber can make a difference in the Dulles Region.
For those who can’t attend a chamber sponsored event in June, donations are also being accepted at the Chantilly chamber office (3901 Centerview Drive, Chantilly, VA 20151) through July 4. Chamber office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
All donations will return to help the local community.
The chamber invites businesses to promote the Governor's Challenge by holding special, on-site collections. Pick up and transport of the donated items can be arranged by calling the chamber.
Donation locations include: the Dulles Chamber’s Chantilly office (3901 Centerview Drive, Suite S, Chantilly VA), the Herndon Chamber tattoo booth at Friday Night Live (Herndon Town Green, Herndon VA), and M&T Bank – Herndon (1025 Herndon Pkwy, Herndon VA)
